Sooner or later, every asphalt pavement is going to need to be rehabilitated. There are several different methods that can be used for pavement rehabilitation, but not every method is suitable for every pavement. However, it is highly likely that at least one of the following methods would be a cost-effective way to rehab your pavement.
Asphalt Pavement Rehab & Cost- Asphalt Overlays
An asphalt overlay consists of a layer of new asphalt that is applied to the top of a properly prepared pavement to restore an aged or damaged surface to like-new condition. When installed correctly, an overlay can provide many years of life. There are three basic types of asphalt overlays.
• Thin lift overlays rarely exceed 1.5 inches. They can be used to restore skid resistance, reduce roughness or protect a distressed pavement. Common distresses suggesting that a thin lift overlay may be appropriate include rutting, raveling, alligator cracking, cracks in the wheel path and transverse cracks.
• Open-graded friction courses are often used to restore skid resistance to pavements that have suffered flushing of asphalt binder or aggregate polishing. They are high-void wearing courses that contain aggregates of a single size. In addition to reducing hydroplaning and skidding, they can also help muffle road noise.
• Structural Asphalt Overlays are typically used to restore or increase a pavement’s structural integrity. For example, they may be used if a pavement is nearing the end of its useful life or must begin to bear additional heavyweight traffic.
Asphalt Pavement Rehab & Cost-Effectiveness – Milling
Milling is a procedure that can remove the precise depth of asphalt desired, including the full depth. The milled surface will have a roughened texture that enhances the bond between an overlay and the existing pavement. Milling can remove bumps, shoving, rutting and most other distortions. Because milling allows elevations to be maintained, the pavement surrounding storm sewer inlets, gutters, manholes and curbs will not need to be adjusted.
Asphalt Pavement Rehab & Cost-Effectiveness – Pulverizing
Pulverizing is sometimes called full-depth reclamation or in-place recycling. This procedure reclaims the full depth of the asphalt as well as the desired amount of the subbase, base and/or native soils. If additives are needed, they are added to the reclaimed material before reshaping and compaction occurs. A structural course of asphalt is then applied. In-place asphalt recycling can improve the pavement’s profile, remove major distresses or modify the pavement’s structure, width or other design elements.
Cold in-place recycling recycles the existing materials into a new base course. This process is suitable for surface potholes, transverse cracking, longitudinal cracking, raveling and fatigue cracking that is not related to a deficiency in the subbase or base.
