What Is Asphalt or Concrete Milling?

Asphalt milling is a reliable, efficient method for resurfacing pavement. Asphalt milling companies like Alpha Paving offer this process as an alternative to full-scale excavation.

Asphalt milling is the removal and recycling of a paved surface’s top layer. This process increases the pavement’s durability and addresses existing issues, such as potholes and cracks. The result is a level, reinvigorated surface that reduces your repair costs, improves stormwater drainage, and speeds up the resurfacing process.

How Does Asphalt Milling Work?

The Milling Process

Asphalt milling removes the top layer of a paved surface and recycles this material for future use. Once the top layer is removed, the remaining asphalt is prepped for resurfacing. New pavement is then installed  on top of the base, creating a stable, long-lasting surface.

Types of Milling Equipment

Milling machines, also known as ‘cold planers,’ are the main pieces of equipment used by asphalt milling contractors. The main function of these machines is to remove the top asphalt layer. The removed asphalt is known as reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP).

Partial Milling Vs. Full Depth Milling

Partial milling removes no more than 2 inches of asphalt. This keeps the binder asphalt layer intact. Full depth milling removes 3 to 5 inches of an asphalt surface, including binder asphalt. Partial milling is less time-consuming and more cost-effective than full depth milling, but full depth milling may be required to fix severely damaged asphalt.

When Is Asphalt Milling Needed?

Asphalt surfaces that are thoroughly cracked, full of potholes, worn down, or at an incorrect elevation can be fixed by asphalt milling contractors like Alpha Paving. Milling is typically a part of the general asphalt resurfacing process, grinding down damaged material to prepare for new pavement on top.

Full-scale replacement and excavation are not always necessary, making asphalt milling a quicker, cost-effective alternative. Excavation is a lengthy process often used to address issues affecting pavement’s base layers and subsurface.

Common Applications of Asphalt Milling

Asphalt milling is a widely used method for strengthening pavement and removing blemishes like potholes. Asphalt milling has various applications, but most property owners choose it for projects requiring cost-effectiveness, efficiency, and high-quality work.

  • Roads and Highways: Asphalt milling is a quick and effective way to remove damaged road segments, fix elevation issues, and ensure smoother rides for all.
  • Parking Lots: Milling will ensure your parking lot is safe for cars and pedestrians.
  • Driveways: Many homeowners choose to have their driveways and paved surfaces milled.
  • Airport Runways and Taxiways: Runways and taxiways must be at an even elevation. The asphalt milling process will ensure smooth travel across the board.
  • Industrial and Warehouse Facilities: Industrial facilities require even surfaces and proper drainage systems to function properly. Asphalt and concrete millings will keep your facility running smoothly.
  • Municipal and Government Projects: Asphalt milling combines cost-effectiveness with quality. This benefits taxpayers’ budgets and commutes.

What Is Asphalt or Concrete Reclamation?

Reclamation strengthens the foundation for a new asphalt or concrete layer, offering enhanced durability. Unlike methods that involve the complete excavation and removal of damaged pavement, reclamation is faster and more cost-effective. This process recycles the existing materials, blending them with new aggregates to create a robust base for the new surface. By doing so, reclamation not only extends the lifespan of your pavement but also provides an environmentally friendly and practical solution for pavement repairs.

The Reclamation Process

Grind & Blend

We grind and blend the material with soil and aggregates to make the foundation more durable for fresh asphalt.

Stabilization

We add stabilizing materials into the blended asphalt to strengthen it and help it settle on the underlying soil.

Compacting & Grading

After we spread stabilizers throughout the asphalt blend, we compact and grade it. Proper compaction and grading make a surface dense and reliable, allowing for proper drainage.

Asphalt Overlay

We complete the asphalt reclamation process by placing a new asphalt layer over the reclaimed base.
