What Are Thermoplastic Pavement Markings?

Water-based paint has been used to stripe pavement for decades, but it’s not the most durable option on the market. Many people choose thermoplastic for its durability, consistency, and longevity.

Thermoplastic is ideal for high-traffic areas like roadways, garages, and parking lots. It lasts significantly longer than traditional water-based paint. Thermoplastic is made of binders, bright pigments, and glass beads.

Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Materials

One of the key differences between traditional and thermoplastic pavement markings is their reflectivity.

Thermoplastic markings are significantly brighter than those painted with water-based paint. This enhanced reflectivity is because of the tiny glass beads mixed into the thermoplastic material.

Thermoplastic is also lightweight, cost-effective, and durable in hot climates—perfect for Texas weather.

Thermoplastic Pavement Marking Application

Once bonded, thermoplastic pavement markings can last up to five years. Alpha Paving applies these markings by preheating the material to 400+ degrees Fahrenheit.

After preheating, we feed the molten thermoplastic into a screed box or a ribbon gun. We then apply the thermoplastic and immediately embed glass beads for enhanced visibility.

Common Thermoplastic Pavement Markings Applications

Thermoplastic line striping is versatile for various traffic control and surface marking needs. It’s a great way to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Here are some of the most common applications for thermoplastic:

  • Roadways and intersections – Thermoplastic offers enhanced visibility and durability for oncoming traffic.
  • Parking lots – Busy parking lots can benefit from thermoplastic due to its longevity and reflectivity.
  • School zones and crosswalks – Visibility is essential for school zones and crosswalks, making thermoplastic an ideal striping material.
  • Bike and bus lanes – Divide oncoming traffic with highly visible bike and bus lanes.
  • Custom traffic symbols and arrows – Preformed thermoplastic can be customized entirely for traffic symbols and arrows.

The Process

Heating the Material

The thermoplastic material is heated to a minimum of 400 degrees Fahrenheit in a melting kettle.

Application Preparation

Once melted, the liquid material is prepared for application. It is loaded into a sprayer or extruder, which is used to apply the markings onto the pavement.

Marking Application

The material is sprayed or extruded onto the pavement surface to form the desired markings. As it cools and solidifies, it adheres to the pavement, creating durable and long-lasting markings
