Potholes are more than just an eyesore. They can pose a hazard to pedestrians and cars, potentially leaving you liable for injuries or damages. Furthermore, potholes can quickly lead to additional damages that are costly to repair, such as alligator cracking. Austin paving challenges are common – but Alpha Paving Industries is here to help.
Preventing potholes from forming is the first course of action. Having your asphalt professionally sealcoated and repaired as soon as damages occur, avoiding corrosive deicing agents and making sure that the area has proper drainage can help prevent potholes.
However, there are times when potholes form despite your best efforts. You will then need to consult an experienced asphalt contractor to have the pothole repaired using one of several different methods. Austin asphalt repair can be handled effectively with the right contractor.
• Remove and Replace: This is the most effective and longest lasting solution. The contractor will remove the area of asphalt containing the pothole as well as a strip of undamaged asphalt. If needed, repairs are made to the foundation. New asphalt is installed and compacted. This type of repair typically lasts as long as the surrounding asphalt, but it is also the most expensive.
• Infrared Patching: This method is almost as permanent a solution as remove and replace. Using infrared technology, the surrounding asphalt is heated to make it workable. New asphalt is then mixed in. The result is one of the more attractive solutions for repairing potholes.
• Skin Patch: A skin patch is a lot like applying a bandage to a cut. The damaged area is cleaned and dried, and then hot asphalt is applied and compacted. This is not a permanent solution, but it is less temporary than the final two methods.
• Throw-and-Go: This is the least permanent method and normally reserved for situations requiring emergency action when a better fix cannot be performed immediately. Cold-mix asphalt is placed in the pothole and left to be compacted by traffic.
• Throw-and-Roll: This is another temporary fix using cold-mix asphalt. The primary difference between this method and throw-and-go is that the fill will be compacted after it is placed.
