Asphalt milling is a very useful technique, but it is one that is unfamiliar to many people. The procedure involves using a milling machine to grind away the pavement to an exact depth. Milling can be used to remove just an inch of the pavement, for example, or to remove the full depth of the asphalt pavement.
Milling – What Can Milling Do?
A milling machine can be used for a variety of applications that require the accurate removal of a predetermined depth of asphalt.
• Milling can be used to level bumpy, rutted or uneven pavement.
• Milling can smooth transitions between different pavements at intersections or drives.
• Milling is often used when installing an overlay to refine the edges or correct drainage issues.
• Milling can be used to remove existing asphalt pavement when repairs are needed to the foundation.
• Milling may be a viable option for pavements in which the aggregate and binder have separated.
• Milling can be performed to create rumble strips on existing or new pavement.
• Milling can be used to repair pavement that has been damaged during an accident or fire.
Benefits of Asphalt Milling
There are many benefits to having asphalt pavement milled.
• Milling is much less expensive than reconstruction.
• Milling allows existing gutter reveals and curbs to be retained.
• Milling typically involves little disruption to the flow of traffic, and in most cases, the milled surface can be reopened to traffic immediately.
• The pavement’s slope and grade can be maintained.
• Milling can be repeated on the same stretch of pavement as often as it is needed.
• Milling is environmentally friendly. The milled particles are 100-percent recyclable, allowing fresh asphalt to be produced with less environmental impact.
• Milling is faster than removing pavement with traditional equipment, often saving customers time as well as money.
How Milling Is Performed
Contractors use a milling machine, which is a piece of equipment that has a large drum equipped with carbide cutters. The drum rotates and the cutters grind away the pavement; water is usually applied to the drum during the process to counteract the heat generated and to reduce the amount of dust that the milling process produces. The milled pavement is moved to a conveyor belt that is attached to the milling machine. Typically, the conveyor belt carries the milled pavement directly to the truck that will haul it away.
There are many different sizes of milling machines available. Some are suitable for milling tennis courts and similar surfaces, while other types are designed for milling extensive areas of pavement such as highways and parking lots. The project’s scope and the depth of pavement that needs to be removed are the main factors that influence the determination of the best machine for a specific project.
