What Was the Scope of the Project?
The parking lot had areas that were damaged or failing. Also, the company needed us to install asphalt paving in a new area. In November 2018, Alpha performed the following work over a period of two days.
• The area near the dumpster was failing, which is not uncommon if an asphalt contractor does not design an area to support heavy trucks that must often make several attempts to get into position. This area required a 5-inch full-depth asphalt repair spanning 474 square feet.
• There were additional failure areas that totaled 1,264 square feet. We made 3-inch asphalt repairs to these areas.
• After we made the repairs, we installed an asphalt overlay on the existing parking lot. Asphalt overlays can be an economical alternative to reconstruction that will typically look and function just like new pavement. The overlay used 6,066 square feet of asphalt with a depth of 1.5 inches.
• The new pavement measured 1,168 square feet. We excavated to a depth of approximately six inches and hauled off existing vegetation. We then imported six inches of base material, which we installed in two lifts with compaction of each lift. On top of the base, we installed type D asphalt with a 2-inch depth.
• Our final task was to apply fresh striping to the parking lot. We followed the existing layout as no changes were required to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and local ordinances.
