Round Rock, TX – The History
Although evidence of human habitation has been found that dates to at least 9000 B.C., the first European settlers did not arrive until 1851. The community was established near a creek with a large, flat round rock in its center. The waterway was named Brushy Creek, and the community’s first postmaster named the settlement Brushy. The rock marked a low-water crossing; in 1854, the community was renamed due in part to the spreading fame of this landmark. When the Chisholm Trail was routed through the area, it crossed the creek at the spot marked by the already well-known rock.
Cotton was the county’s money crop from the time that Round Rock was founded through the middle of the 20th century. However, Round Rock did not experience substantial growth during this period; nearby Taylor had the train depot and the cotton gins. As the county’s economic powerhouse during the 1950s, the original plans for Interstate 35 routed this new type of highway through Taylor. Routing plans were changed after opposition from the leaders and many citizens of Taylor and lobbying by the leaders of Round Rock to bring the interstate through their town. The interstate brought opportunities to develop the economy of Round Rock, and by the late 1990s, Round Rock had attracted some major employers, including Dell. As of 2016, the population of Round Rock is estimated to be almost 123,000; for comparison, the population in 1970 was scarcely more than 2,800.
