Transportation has always been important to the residents of Temple. After all, the town was founded by a railroad in 1881 and named for Bernard Moore Temple, an official with the Santa Fe Railroad. Although railroads are still part of the town’s economy, residents are more familiar with the asphalt pavement gracing many of Temple’s commercial and residential thoroughfares. Alpha Paving Industries has been helping customers in Temple construct, maintain and repair their asphalt pavements for more than three decades. We have repeatedly demonstrated that our focus is on delivering exceptional quality on every job — whether we are resurfacing a city street, sealcoating and striping a parking lot, repairing cracked asphalt pavement or helping business owners bring their parking lots into compliance with ADA regulations.
Temple, TX – The History
The Santa Fe Railroad needed a source of services for passengers as well as its equipment. In 1881, the area around Temple was selected as a satisfactory junction point, so the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad decided to found the town. Prospective residents were brought in by trains from five cities; those who bought lots in Temple were refunded the price of their tickets. Lots were sold at auction, and prospective buyers were treated to a barbecue and a party.
During Temple’s early years, the town had several unflattering nicknames. Some people called it Mudville due to the area’s thick, rich soil. Others referred to it as Tanglefoot; the town’s numerous saloons combined with the mud made walking home a challenge for some of those who imbibed too freely. However, as the town grew and lost its rough edges, it became known as the “Prairie Queen” and the “City of Trees.”
By 1910, Temple had three hotels, six restaurants, six cotton gins and many other businesses. The population had grown to almost 11,000 residents, and they had eight druggists, 22 doctors and six dentists to see to their health. They also had a hospital known as the Temple Sanitarium. In 1922, the name was changed to the Scott & White Memorial Hospital in honor of the two physicians who had founded the Temple Sanitarium. Scott & White is now Temple’s largest employer with more than 12,000 employees.
Temple Today
With a diverse, thriving economy, abundant cultural venues and excellent shopping, residents of Temple enjoy amenities that are not often associated with a town of its size. The town’s proximity to some of the state’s largest cities has made it a hub for transportation; Temple is 65 miles from Austin, 130 miles from Dallas, 147 miles from San Antonio and 168 miles from Houston. Temple is also less than 30 miles from Fort Hood; encompassing over 215,000 acres, it is the world’s largest military base.

Have new sealcoating applied periodically; depending on your pavement’s use, this is typically every two years. See more about Asphalt Sealcoating
• Be proactive about repairing cracks. Neglected cracks will continue to expand. Furthermore, water can seep through the cracks and reach the foundation. If the foundation suffers sufficient damage, your entire pavement could be at risk of failing prematurely. See more about Asphalt Crack Repair
